BAM BASH 2008

SUNDAY 10TH AUGUST AT SUTTON COLDFIELD FIRE STATION

Once again, Sutton Coldfield Fire Station was the venue for our annual competition and this year 15 members competed for the Steve Mann trophy.

The weather was typical of our Summer so far – with intermittent showers making for challenging conditions for some of the rides and the slow-riding. Format for the event was consistent with previous years with everyone being tested on their on-road riding, slow machine control, RoadCraft/Highway Code and identification of machine faults.
We stayed with the high-tech format this year and a lot of interest was generated by the interactive display that updated the rankings in real-time as scores were entered
The scores reflected the high standards and competition for the top 3 places went all the way to the final round. Congratulations to Stephen White who went one place better than last year taking the trophy with a score of 360 – this despite being handicapped on the Machine Faults discipline on account of having seen them all last year. Nigel Hackett was a close runner up with 352 points and third place went to Jonathan Scott with 340 points.
I would like to pass on thanks to people who assisted in the organisation and running of the day:
Sponsors – Sherwoods Motorcycles – Charlie once again exhibited a range of Suzuki Machines and donated prizes – Hein Gerricke and Roy Pidcock Motorcycles who kindly donated prizes
BAM members – Marion O’ Brien, Liz Robinson, John Lickley, Steve Beggan, Colin Daniels, Suki Gosal, Jim Fallon, Lester Phelps, John Wills, Fred Brown, Mark Weaver, John Hendrikson and Les Pratt who all worked tirelessly on the day as well as Adrian for being on hand to award the prizes
Sutton Coldfield Fire Station for hosting us, and Sutton Coldfield Sea Cadets for keeping us fed and watered
Finally sincere thanks to Steve Mann’s family for once again sponsoring the first prize. Especially Steve’s sister Lisa Burke who joined us to award the first prize to Stephen White

The Steve Mann Trophy commemorates Steve who was a full member of the Birmingham Advanced Motorists car group. He had just embarked on his motorcycle training when he was involved in a fatal collision. Ever since, his family have been actively involved in raising road-safety awareness and have now sponsored the BAM Bash for a number of years. As a club we are extremely grateful to Bob and Gill – Steve’s parents, and Lisa – Steve’s sister and proud to be associated with remembering Steve in this way
